“Why me?” I ask in a breath.

My day looks gloomier now.

“Beats me,” my boss says, not making the slightest effort to conceal her displeasure.

Of course, she’d love to go there instead of me, but he chose me, and she can’t even hold it against me, because everything in my demeanor suggests that I’m in complete agreement with her.

I don’t want to face Remi Arlington alone. Again.

She runs her gaze down on me, and my clothes feel suddenly ill-fitted.

“There’s only one thing,” she says as she studies me with a critical eye. “You have to dress professionally.”

Lifting her long manicured index finger, she’s pointing to my skirt and short jacket.

I barely bite back a sneering remark.

What is wrong with these people? Why do they keep picking at my clothes? And what does professionally mean to him anyway?

Is Sherrie’s skintight dress, two sizes smaller than what she should be wearing, looking professional?

The woman has a crush on him, and she dresses accordingly. I understand. But I have no interest in seducing him, not that I could anyway.

I’m sure that his decision to see me was nothing more than a last minute whim. I’m also sure that nothing clued her in that he would opt for me.

The fact that she has squeezed herself into that dress, her lungs at peril, tells me that I’m right. She hoped that she would have another chance to spend some time with him.

Her saddened eyes and glaring disappointment confirm my theory as well. Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can do.

Still, I don’t get it.

Why would he need me to bring an invoice and oversee the art delivery when the people who are in charge with it are more qualified than me?

“Why––”

Her hand shoots up.

“I told you I have no idea,” she cuts me off, irritated. “And stop asking me all these questions. I have no idea why he does what he does. All I know is that this sale needs to go through. The money has already been deposited in my business account, and I want him happy, not to process a refund. Please don’t make things harder than they already are.”

She starts to sound like him.

I wish I knew what she means by ‘making things harder’, and I’m tempted to ask her, but her glare makes me shut my mouth at once.

“You can leave now. Go home and find something suitable to wear,” she says, her gaze falling on me again, merciless like a machete.

What could be more suitable than what I’m already wearing?

Okay, there’s a soft sweater beneath my jacket, but I doubt she knows that he’s allergic to knits.

“Make sure you’ll be there on time,” she says just as I open my mouth to ask another question.

Never mind.

Tensely, she continues.

“Per his instructions, the delivery is scheduled for six o’clock sharp. You have to make sure that the men arrive on time. Not a minute early, and not a minute late. Under no circumstances I want to get a phone call from him regarding this issue,” she says, her face gloomy as her voice.
